Pfaff special features
What is Dual Feed?
On
all sewing machines the fabric is pulled through the machine by
means of a toothed 'feed dog' which moves at a set rate. If you
alter the stitch length this 'feed dog' makes longer or shorter
movements.
Of
course it can only drag the lower layer of fabric. The top layer,
pressed down by the presser foot, must follow the lower layer. This
is why you sometimes get seam 'wrinkles' in certain fabrics.
The
unique Pfaff system provides an extra 'feed dog' above the fabric,
which works at the same rate and stitch length as the lower feeder.
Also, when you press the reverse button, both feeders go into
reverse feed. You therefore eliminate wrinkling etc.
Now,
many dealers will tell you that a 'walking foot is just as good.'
That's rubbish. The walking foot attachment is operated by the
needlebars up and down movement driving a ratchet. The feed rate is
fixed so when you alter your stitch length the walking foot
continues to feed at it's own rate.
This
can cause even more wrinkling and 'creep'! Also, when you press your
reverse button, your lower feed dog will reverse and your walking
foot carries on feeding forwards in its own sweet way. So.... a
walking foot is certainly better than nothing, but it is in no way
to be compared to true dual feeding, as on the Pfaff machine.
